How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
Through new technologies created by cyber programs and companies, it has started many opportunities for people in the workplace to indulge in deviant behavior. Whether it deals with harming hardware or corrupting software, this criminal behavior can happen anywhere. Some fields, however, are more at risk to these attacks such as healthcare, which deals with personal information along with banking. Data breaches have become more common in the digital age since hackers are maturing at a faster rate resulting in detrimental loss to private information contained in organizations. In many systems across the country, even in our own government, personal information is stored in computers and is often sent through technology. This information including credit card numbers and social security are at high risk with a big payout for hackers. In cases such as healthcare, hackers can use health insurance policies and file fraudulent claims. Nurses and doctors can also access a patients sensitive information and sell it online. It would not be hard for someone in the field to access all this private information and discreetly distribute it if they felt threatened by being fired or was reprimanded by a superior. Another common example in our own field is an unsatisfied employee looking to release anger at his company from either been fired or not receiving a promotion. If they were to be fired from the job, he could download sensitive information while still having access and sell it to either a rival company or online on black markets. That is why companies make it a requirement to restrict all access of ex-employees so information can be protected from harm. Another example could be shutting down servers or allowing hackers to openly attack a business. With online crime, it takes longer to identify perpetrators unlike with in-person crime it could be caught by a witness or security cameras. Cybersecurity in general has made it easier for criminals to steal information for a longer period of time especially if they work inside the business.
