How does your major relate to cybersecurity technology?
While the question asks how my major relates back to cybersecurity, my declared major is actually cybersecurity! Instead of giving a definition, I thought I would describe how I plan to use my major in the career field I hope to join and how it relates back to the things I will be learning throughout my courses. I plan to use my degree to steer towards ethical hacking to either join a business corporation or hopefully work for the government. Ethical hacking/Penetration testing is the act of intruding a system/network to find out areas that need to be strengthened. It helps discover vulnerabilities where malicious attackers could potentially infiltrate and exploit systems causing loss of data or financial loss. Ethical hacking trains you to think like a malicious hacker and allows you to work outside the box. It is great for people with a large imagination and can think of new possibilities that could occur within the systems if one were try to hack it. Many ethical hackers use the same methods as malicious hackers with authorized permission for the purpose of defeating threats before they were to ever happen. I would also like to use my degree to work overseas in an embassy to explore a whole new world I have never seen. My minor, Mandarin Chinese, will help me communicate better with those we work with since many in the IT field are native Chinese or from a Mandarin speaking country. Being able to work in the embassy in Beijing would fulfill my dream since I could potentially become a translator for the people in my field. By taking my cybersecurity degree, I give myself opportunities those with only a language degree could not have. By having hacking skills or another skill in the field, it ups my chances of my dream being fulfilled and to truly enjoy the job I will have for the rest of my life. Hopefully, by completing my studies, I will be ready to face the real world and defeat any challenge it throws towards me.
