Describe four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals.
Four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals are privacy concerns, data security, consent, and the potential for discrimination. Personal data collection and transfer, ranging from sensitive medical records to internet behavior patterns, create ethical concerns about the right to privacy. People expect their personal information to be handled appropriately and to have control over who has access to it. Unauthorized access can do serious harm and jeopardize people’s independence. Next data security, protecting an individual’s sensitive information requires safeguarding against illegal access, data breaches, or cyberattacks. It is the ethical responsibility of businesses and persons in charge of data storage to develop adequate security measures and ensure that data is not misused. Third, individuals should be informed about the type of information being gathered, how it will be used, and given the option to offer explicit consent. Lastly, The potential for discrimination, algorithms, and data analytics can perpetuate biases present in historical datasets, leading to unfair treatment or discriminatory outcomes.
