Cybersecurity deals with the security of people’s belongings online. There are many majors that relate to cybersecurity that are offered at ODU. Today I will be talking about four of those majors: computer science, criminal justice/criminology, sociology, and psychology. Computer science majors study the phenomena of computers. They learn different programs and run the programs. They explore how a computer can be hacked into. The computer science majors learn how people’s information can be taken from their computers. Criminal justice majors, my major, teach how to detect and prevent and what types of punishments we should implement for cybersecurity crimes. Now criminology is the study of crime, so criminologists study the people that commit the crime and why they do it, along with the outcome of the crime. Sociologists study how society pushes people into committing cybercrimes or being a victim of cybercrimes. They also look into what specific groups might be more likely to be victims of cybercrimes. The last major is psychology which studies a person’s mind and body. They explore how people act when committing crimes, like specific patterns they follow. As stated before, there are so many other majors that can relate to cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity as a whole is still relatively new to most of society. Most cybercrimes are not punishable by law or serve light sentences. For example, hacking jail time is only up to 12 months. That is a sentence that does no justice to the crime. If you take into consideration all the harm they have done by just hacking, the sentence seems way too light. This is why it is a good thing that ODU is making students take impact on technology courses as a GEN ED; that way, more students can learn about the advantages and disadvantages of technology in our modern world.
