1. What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?
The overlaps between criminal justice and cybercrime has significantly grown over the years because of the evolution of technology. Law enforcement and prosecutors continuously deal with cases that are cybercrime related. Cyber crimes such as: hacking, fraud, cyber harassment, cyber stalking, identity theft etc, are the most prevelent cyber crimes that law enforcement agencies deal with. Digital evidence can be difficult to obtain in todays time because the high levels of anonymity and the ability to delete information. For example if a cyber criminals hacks into something and steals information from a company or something and deletes it, law enforcement have no evidence to prove such. Criminal justice systems has to increasingly find evidential ways to gather information to prosecute offenders. Legislations and regulations are a major overlaps between cyber crimes. As cyber crimes evolve, lawmakers will need to implement and adjust legislations that will address these offenses. It is necessary to revolutionize laws and criminal justice systems that will better define cyber crimes, determine penalties/consequences, and establishing restructure guidelines for criminal justice systems to investigate and prosecute cyber related offenses. Another way that criminal justice and cyber crimes overlap is through digital forensics. Criminals justice systems and retrieving data from devices and examining network logs, and reconstruction digital events to support investigation and court cases. Criminals justice systems also educate the public about cyber threats and best practice to avoid attacks/vulnerabilities. This approach will help cyber crimes by raising awareness and encouraging cyber security. Over time cybercrimes and criminal justice system will garuanteed overlap because it is an inevitable aspect in life. Cyber criminals will continue to find away to avoid being caught which will make it more difficult for criminal justice systems to detect; however, criminal justice system will learn ways to prevent and catch these cyber criminals.
