What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to other disciplines discussed in this class?

Throughout time the advancement of technology has allowed crime to not only flourish in person but also online. With increasing cybercrime it leads into the lives of those studying law. Criminal justice students and careers now need to learn in depth about how the abuse of cybersecurity and other cyber relations come into conjunction with the law. One of the main ways they can do this is through digital forensics. Digital forensics is, “the investigations of cyber, computer, electronic, or other types of cybercrime,” as defined in “Cybersecurity and Criminal Justice: Exploring the Intersections” by Brian K. Payne and Lora Hadzhidimova. With the knowledge of digital forensics and how it relates to cybercrime these students learn how the law determines punishment for any of those offenders. Cybercrime is defined by Wikipedia as “a crime that involves a computer and a network.” Many different forms of cybercrime include harassment online, cyber stalking, theft, malware attacks, hacking, etc. Many students who are studying criminal justice can also overlap into cybersecurity programs and vice versa. A study done by Thomas Holt showed that out of 356 cyber programs, 61 programs included criminal justice courses, while 20% of the criminal justice programs included cybersecurity courses. I believe this overlap relates also to the overlap of cybersecurity into businesses and large corporations. Without the knowledge of cybersecurity and cybercrime in businesses many of them would fail and people’s lives would be at risk. The connection between the two is mainly through the fact that businesses also need to study different aspects within cybersecurity and cybercrime to protect their business systems, employees, and customers. They need to ensure that the company’s sensitive information is kept that way and that their employees and customer’s confidential information is kept private. The same way that criminal justice majors and careers will need to know cybersecurity and cybercrime to be able to probably study and practice their own subject.
