What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?
When criminal activity is carried out on the internet and through the use of technology, this is referred to as cybercrime. Criminal justice is the administration of justice to those who have committed a crime. I believe there are undoubtedly some links between criminal justice and cybercrime. I would have to say that technology plays an important role in criminality because a significant amount of crime is linked to technology. Computers and technology have become ingrained in people’s daily lives. They are present everywhere, and society has become reliant on them. With the constant emergence of new technology, new technology-related crimes are committed. If someone commits a cybercrime, they would be breaking the law and will face consequences through the criminal justice system. Criminal justice scholars and criminologists have clearly been unable to keep up with these changes in technology. There are several ways in which criminal justice and cybercrime overlap. One way is that criminologists look to what is known as human factors to explain human behavior. Human factors in criminal justice and cybercrime are discussed by criminologists. Another overlap is that people who usually complete a criminal justice major in college are more likely to have the knowledge and skills to pursue a career in cybersecurity. As it was partially created by criminal justice professionals, digital Forensics also provides another area where criminal justice and cybercrime overlap; therefore, criminal justice scholars play an important role in the growth of digital forensics. These overlaps could also be related to some of the other disciplines covered in this course. An example is how some criminologists consider certain types of cybercrime to be white-collar crimes. White-collar crimes are those committed by someone with a high level of respectability and social standing in their field. Although not all cybercrimes are white-collar crimes, it remains unclear which existing white-collar crimes compromise forms of cybercrime.
