How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?

Workplace deviance refers to intentional, malicious attempts to sabotage an organization by causing problems at work. It is also defined as voluntary behavior that violates significant norms and endangers the well-being of an organization and its employees. With the advancement of cyber technology, there are more opportunities for workplace deviance to occur. This is due to insider threats within a business or organization. An example is cyber loafing which is one type of workplace deviance that occurs. Cyber loafing is the act of employees using their company’s Internet access for personal purposes during their work hours. This is a form of workplace deviance because the company’s well-being is jeopardized. Unproductive behavior is a common type of workplace deviance, so things like using the Internet for personal purposes fall under this category. Other types of workplace deviance include property abuse and failing to follow company policies. Cyber technology now allows workers to be able to access personal information while at work by using work phones or computers. Because many people do not use technology for what it is intended for, the rise of technology has created a much larger problem for businesses. Another issue that I believe has arisen as a result of technology is that many people will be on their social media while at work rather than working on their tasks. Many people do not use cyber technology maliciously, but rather unconsciously. A lot more of organizations and businesses are beginning to use cyber technology, but this may cause issues within the organization. Overall, rules regarding the use of technology in the workplace should be established in order to reduce workplace deviance.
