Cybertechnology has been a major reason why workplace production has gone up but it also brought some downsides. The one that we will be talking about is how it created more opportunities for workplace deviance. Workplace deviance is defined as “voluntary behavior that violates significant organizational norms and in so doing threatens the well-being of an organization, its members, or both”. Workplace deviance through cybertechnology can occur just as easily if not easier than regular workplace deviance. The reason for this is the fact that it happens through the internet rather than having it happen face to face. This might make an employee more comfortable with harassing others such as their coworkers. Examples of this harassment include unsolicited sexual pictures as well as sexual talk. Sexual harassment in the workplace is something that we hear a lot about and cybertechnology has made it easier to do so. Another way it can cause workplace deviance is allowing private information to be stolen. For example, if a disgruntled employee gets fired for one reason or another they might steal private information belonging to the company to get back at it. They could then sell it to a rival company to make money or sell it to hackers. This would leave the company at a higher risk of getting hacked and having even more important information getting stolen. The angry former employee could also be the one to conduct these raids using the information that they stole. Another way cybertechnology can allow workplace deviance is a current employee sabotaging the company from within. They could continuously steal and sell information to anyone that would want it while keeping a low profile. Depending on how they go about it they may go undetected for extended periods of time. These are all concerns that stem from cybertechnology, but I believe we can work past it and continue to use it for good reasons.
