In this day and age information is mainly stored electronically and this includes information about individuals. Naturally there are concerns that arise from this and this post will be about four of them. The biggest one is the possibility of it causing harm to the individuals having their information stored. Having your personal information stored online can lead to it being leaked without your permission. An example of this is doxing and it is happening more and more on places like social media and online gaming. An especially vulnerable group of people when it comes to doxing are minors. Minors are often the targets of these attacks usually following an argument online. Since they are minors they lack the maturity and resources to deal with these attacks and might end up being harassed even further afterwards. The people that carry out these attacks could also be minors since they lack the maturity to realize what they are doing is wrong and illegal. Another ethical issue that arises is the breach of trust. Users of these platforms that collect personal data do not give them their permission to collect personal data. This involves things like cookies that collect data and while they are mostly harmless, the fact that the users data is being collected might leave them feeling betrayed. This also leads us to our next problem which is security. Having things like your credit card information stored might be considered useful, but this could lead to it falling into the wrong hands. It would be like the digital equivalent of a cashier memorizing your card details and then using it themselves. There is also another risk that comes with storing someone’s data electronically. Something could happen to it, like a cyber attack, and cause it to be deleted. This would be a great inconvenience for those that trusted their information to be kept safe.
