I was always interested in technology and I wanted to learn more about what computers can really do, so first I came to ODU with my intended degree as computer science. This changed when I finished my second semester of my sophomore year, I realized the weekly coding assignments took up lots of my time and I was struggling to get them in when they were due. Computer science was not something I wanted to pursue as a career anymore and by the time I switched out I had already completed the minor for it. I changed to cyber security and I’ve always had interest in this field since without even knowing it, this is because my best friend from high school was working for an IT firm and he was working from home and he was also doing side projects for himself. He had a server rack and dual screen monitor so I was interested to see what he was doing. I would always ask questions to get him talking so I could learn new knowledge on something I would eventually be studying. I have never been hacked and there wasn’t a specific event that made me choose cyber but I knew I would want to dive deeper in technology. Another reason why I chose cyber was because I wanted to get away from heavy coding assignments and I didnt want to take the IT route so cyber made the most sense. There are still assignments that require you to use linux but for me I personally enjoy using linux. This field will become a lot more exciting when I enter the workforce and gain real world experience. Cyber is also something that has created lots of job opportunities and it was a field that was growing in popularity and I think this could be another factor as to why I chose cyber.
