As discussed in our discussion boards, the main weapon offenders have against their victims on an online forum is the ability to remain anonymous. Anonymity is a dangerous ‘drug’ that affects people online in usually negative ways. People who are unable to control themselves online tend to be rude, ignorant, or otherwise ‘toxic.’ The definition Merriam-Webster uses to describe toxic is a person who can be “extremely harsh, malicious, or harmful.” These kinds of people usually have a negative air around them that affects people throughout their life. People may encounter these types of people in real life as well, but people online can be more toxic than people in real life. However, it truly depends on the person and not everyone is the same. Another thing is the various amounts of scams that have risen and have become easier in recent years because of cyber technology. It has become increasingly easier for these scams to take place as they are given a new platform to happen. People can download malicious files to their computers such as trojans, keyloggers, malware, that can steal their information or damage their systems. Peoples livelihoods can be destroyed by these scams, as they can cause a single person thousands of dollars if they are not careful. The need for better education when it comes to online safety only becomes greater with each passing day. Another thing is the easy availability of social media with the advent of these technologies. Facebook, Twitter, other media sites that give a platform for racists, bigots, etc. has a huge affect on people. Certain events are exacerbated because people have a platform for their negativity, false information, and other topics that do not contribute to the greater whole. Two years into a major pandemic that could have probably passed if not for all the false information, misplaced loyalty, and politics.
