There is a decent amount of overlap with criminal justice and cyber-crime. The basis of both of them relate to crime in general. Criminal justice focuses on how concepts like law and courts work. Meanwhile, cyber-crime focuses on crimes committed through the network. They relate as in essence, criminal justice defined how those who commit cyber-crimes are dealt with. Like other crime, criminal justice always is there to help establish punishments for offenders- and in this case, cyber-criminals. There is no reason for people in the criminal justice field to neglect cyber-crime as there is a clear related between them. There needs to be clear, defined punishments for those who commit virtual crimes as we do for all other varieties of offenders. Many powerful countries pursue the logical option and invest in cybersecurity and are able to fend off attacks, and even have some resources to be able to counter these attacks. Anyone who pays attention will know that the top countries invest a decent amount of money into their cyber operations.

There are also many fields, like digital forensics, that relate to cyber-crime and thus criminal justice. Digital forensics includes looking at and analyzing data to see if it has been tampered with and being able to see other traces of evidence that can link technology use to people. Digital forensics is important as people who tamper with data or otherwise commit crime online are able to be tracked down and prosecuted. Speak of which, it helps when prosecuting offenders as it becomes a valuable piece of evidence. It will likely follow the same path as forensic linguistics, as in people will only readily accept it when it helps solve a big-name case, like in forensic linguistics case, the Unabomber.

It is crucial to understand that there is decent overlap with the two disciplines and should be readily accepted to be related or borderline interdisciplinary. As I am both pursuing criminal justice and cybersecurity majors, I have noticed how the two can overlap in various ways and people should see for themselves as well. Neglecting cybersecurity, and cyber-crime for that matter, is not goof practice to the future as it leaves us open to various vulnerabilities. Cyber-crime should be emphasized more in institutions around the country and world.
