I chose cybersecurity for many reasons. When I first found the cybersecurity major, it sounded interesting by name, and then I also saw the various opportunities this major could offer. There are many opportunities in not only the private sector, but also in the form of government jobs. When I’m bored, I tended to mess around on computers or on various game consoles. I always was surprised at how much you could break them by doing things that were never intended. With cybersecurity, it is like that but on a larger and more competitive scale.

I may have to temper my expectations, but I would like to find a federal job pertaining to cybersecurity. If not, I am gauging my other options that have to do with cybersecurity. I also am pursuing criminal justice alongside my cybersecurity major. I also plan on minoring or concentrating on cyber crime. I hope that criminal justice and cyber crime will help me in finding future opportunities when I am expected to graduate in 2023.

I am also thinking about pursuing a commission to become an officer in the armed forces, and hope that my majoring in criminal justice and cybersecurity would look desirable to any recruiters. I hope to find either a job relating to cybersecurity in the armed forces, and if I am not able to- I would possibly like to pursue another cybersecurity job within the Department of Defense. These may be unreachable goals, but I would like to think that my actions now with allow me to achieve my goals.

Cybersecurity is also important to protect our systems. It does not only pertain to the individual, but it also pertains to countries. As tensions rise, and time passes, other countries are increasing their cyber defenses as well as their offensive capabilities. The United States needs to be prepared for whatever other countries may do to harm national security. Cybersecurity is paramount in a growing technological and internet-based civilization. The information age is a convenient era, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the most secure.
