The world as we know it changed forever with the advent of computers and the internet. Even from their earliest days computers have helped mankind achieve unthinkable wonders. In 1969 a series of computers and sensors is what allowed Neil Armstrong and several other astronauts to go to the moon a monument achievement which couldn’t have been done without them. Today computers are far more advanced than what we had in the late 60s. It is often joked about that a computer chip in your cell phone is 10x smarter and more capable than the computers in those rockets in the 60s. But the question is often asked what has computers changed? Have they made the world safer or have they made the world more dangerous. The answer is both. Here I will list 3 ways computers have both made the world safer and more dangerous to live in. The first way that computers have made the world safer to live in is their ability to provide vital information to hospitals about a person’s medical history thus speeding up the treatment process of someone who may have fallen ill. Computer’s being interconnected in hospitals allows for files and date to be transmitted instantly. Before hand this could have taken days or weeks for information to be transferred from one hospital to another and now it can be done in a matter of seconds. Another way computers have made the world safer is their involvement in anti terror organizations like the FBI and the department of homeland security. On numerous occasions since 9/11 people who wish the united states harm have tried and failed to carry out terrorist attacks in the name of jihad or other extremist ideologies. They failed because of the cyber monitoring capabilities that the government has. This has saved countless lives from senseless violence and therefore has made the world safer. The final way that computers have made the world safer is in Naval Aviation. Prior to fly by wire computing systems pilots had to fly the plane with nothing to save them if they upset the plane’s flying envelope. With the latest fly by wire systems the Navy can even have their jets land on the aircraft carrier autonomously. This allows the get aboard rate to be in the 90% range making the survivability of the profession much greater. One way computers make the world less safe is through the evolution of hacking. This can cost people large sums of financial wealth and in some cases can cause a person’s safety to be compromised. Another way computers make the world less safe is through means of the black market web. Criminals use this method of the internet to buy weapons and other illicit goods sometimes in large quantities so that they can commit crimes without being traced or raising the suspicion of the authorities. Lastly computers have made the world less safe through the use of propaganda from terror organizations like ISIS, Hamas, and Al Qaeda. There has been tangible evidence that shows these propaganda videos are directly responsible for multiple terror attacks world wide. And this is how computers have made the world both more and less safe.
