On the Social Media Disorder Scale I only answered one question with a “yes:” “Often used social media to escape from negative feelings?” I only ever use social media when there’s nothing else I have to do so I scroll on it to curb boredom but never post on it. I do know a lot of people that would answer yes to more of these questions though as young people often rely on social media to, well, socialize. The need for likes and followers has outweighed the need for genuine human connections for some people and it is an alarming and sad development to see occur. Yet this seems to be a mostly American thing with social media being the most accessible here as other parts of the world have less or no access at all like China or North Korea. The more time people have on social media growing up correlates with how dependent they become on the attention from social media. I never used social media growing up so I have no strong desires toward it unlike those who have had smartphones since preschool. It all depends on how early and often social media comes into a person’s life as to if they will answer yes on more questions on this scale.
