In this sample letter it is immediately obvious that it is an example of the economic theory of Laissez-faire, specifically how it is noted that the government prefers to respond to already-occurred breaches rather than preventing them. It also relates to the Marxian theory as those with the power to breach technology are exploiting those who simply wished to pay for glass washer parts without knowing that such a breach could happen. This breach also breaches the social theory of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs by having a clear flaw and lack of the safety needs which would protect user data. Safety needs are classified as a basic need, so failing to uphold an individual’s safety by not maintaining the security to prevent and detect the breach violates the individual’s needs. It also shows common social science principles of victimization as before the letter was sent to the victims there was no Knowledge of Victimization. Having a weak server that is easy to break into is not predictable, but keeping your card data with a company you may have only purchased items from once puts yourself at more risk. In effect, this adds to the victim precipitation that can be used to study this case and prevent yourself from becoming another victim of the same kind of breach by learning how to prevent yourself from being victimized.
