Reflecting on the structure and nature of the NICE categories, here’s how I’d rank them based on personal interest and work style. The most appealing is protection and defense. It is hands-on, dynamic, and directly impactful. Working on incident response and threat analysis means you’re often at the forefront of defending systems. The second most appealing to me is design and development, particularly roles such as cybersecurity architecture and systems testing. They involve building secure systems from the ground up, which I find both challenging and rewarding. The least appealing to me is investigation. While vital, roles like cybercrime investigation and digital evidence analysis often involve meticulous, retrospective work, it is too slow-paced. The other least appealing choice is implementation and operation. This looks pretty repetitive and procedural. I lean more toward design level or strategic work versus routine maintenance. The NICE framework offers a brilliant way to understand the breadth of cybersecurity work. Choosing a path depends on your work style, interests, and long-term goals. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The NICE Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity, hosted by NICCS under CISA, establishes a standard lexicon to describe cybersecurity work across government, industry, and academia.
