The media’s influence on our perception of cybersecurity has a major impact on how we view the field of study. The biggest influence in the media has been movies that show somebody hacking. Seeing the computer screen in the movies with all the green text scrolling and hacking systems caught many of the young generations’ eye. The problem with this however is that cybersecurity isn’t all about hacking and binary code, it is about safeguarding or lives digitally so that we can be protected with technology. The media needs to be aware that yes, there is hacking and coding involved but there is a safe and defensive nature about the filed. Just because you saw someone hacking in a movie does not mean that you should go around trying to hack as there are serious consequences. In conclusion, movies can help engage new people into the cybersecurity filed and help build a better understanding of what safeguarding the digital environment we live in.
