Everyone has gone through that one experience that undeniably marks us. The way we rise above them, however, is what defines us. This is what defines me. Resulting from my fixation on those who have been here before me, I’ve tried to take the challenging journey to things even when other won’t deem this “necessary” or “worth it”. My perseverance in front of challenges, my will to go further and my welcoming attitude towards different perspectives have permitted me to become the man, laborer, thinker, student, companion I am today and who I will be in the future.

A modest start doesn’t mark how your journey will look. Like most of society, I wasn’t born to a well-off family. As a result, educational achievements were my attempt to fight for a better life. However, after 12 consecutive years being in the honor roll of the schools I attended to, my curiosity won me over and I started considering alternative pathways to success. Even though I didn’t have a clear idea of what success looked like, perseverance and clear goals send me forth. This has resulted in me being exposed to the job market since a young age.

Now I can confidently say that it was all worth it. After all that hard work had to pay off somewhere, right? As a current honors student in a renowned university in the state of Virginia, I’m the proof that good studentship beats talent. At the young age of 19, where the last 3 years I’ve lived in a new country, I’ve held various entry positions at renowned companies and internships to key sectors of the city I live in.

The only limit is the one you set. Seeing how constructive and abysmally different from what I originally expected my life journey has been, my horizons have significantly expanded. Venturing into a field I no nothing about, biomedical sciences and engineering, for my undergraduate career is proof of my strive to keep cultivating myself. Currently, I hope to be a researcher or pursue a career in the medical field; however, as I’ve been tought until now, luck only comes to the prepared. My task is to simply prepare myself to the best of my ability.Knowledge isn’t heavy and experience doesn’t hurt. The person I am today and will become in the future are undoubtedly tied to journey you exposed yourself to. I didn’t allow my circumstances to overrun me as a young kid. Again, I haven’t allowed my circumstances to tell me what institutions I should attend or what environment I should expose myself. I, absolutely, won’t let my circumstances set the ceiling for my future

-Ivan Reyes Castillo. 9/10/25

Assignment titled “Assignment #1 – Personal Statement” It reads: Even though nobody is perfect that doesn’t stop one from striving to it.
