Assignment titled ” Assignment #2 – Article Types” from my genetics class.
It reads:
It’s no surprise that scientists have a variety of ways to acquire and verify data. So, it’d be natural for scientific literature to evolve accordingly. Nowadays scientific literature has various types each with different levels of information gathering or results portrayal.
A primary article is a public display of the methods and results of previously conducted research on a topic or subject, where the scientists conducting the study and the authors of the paper are the same individuals. This type of article normally are first hand accounts of how a specific topic or subject was researched into, as well as the results obtained. Unequivocally bringing the most detailed, accurate and trust-worthy recollection of events and results of a scientific investigation, this type of article is one the first type of articles researchers turn to when they need information on a similar topic.
However, even though a primary article and a review article may have a similar focus and conclusions, a review article is a recollection of events and results over a range of primary articles in a specified field of research. Review articles provide an overview of gathered information over various scientific investigations on a specific field of research. As a result they don’t capture all the information on a specific topic, but provide a summary over a body of research. They are useful if one’s getting familiarized with a new field of research.
The peer review process reassures the trustworthiness and accuracy of the information presented in an article. The peer review process involves the revision of scholar literature, be it primary or review articles, by experts on its respective field to verify and certify the accuracy of the methods, originality of results and the logic of the presented data . The peer review process is crucial for scientific magazines as a result of its effectiveness in determining errors and confirming the veracity of information in a paper to be published.
