End of term reflection

Cell biology was an important course in my field, biomedical sciences, because provided me with an introductory, detailed view of processes that allows us to properly function as complex organisms. As someone who aspires to create new medical devices by applying new or previously discovered biological principles/truths, cell biology provided me a strong foundation to continue learning about the human body. As an example, for my last assignment in my genetics class I talked about a, not so recent, scientific paper discussing mitochondria DNA replacement therapy. This therapy’s goal is change an embryo with damaged mitochondrial DNA to prevent the future kid from suffering mtDNA related diseases. It was in this class that I learned about the nature of mtDNA, its reproduction and the origin of mitochondria. Maybe in the future I’ll participate in life saving therapies employing concepts learned in this class. In what will be a long journey of studentship and discovery, undoubtedly, knowing the basics is crucial. From simpler events such as the cell cycle to detailed descriptions of how tight junction enable the skin barrier. Cell biology provided me with a framework that I can expand on.
