{"id":184,"date":"2026-02-16T20:30:49","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T20:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/student.wp.odu.edu\/ihenr002\/?page_id=184"},"modified":"2026-05-05T19:49:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T19:49:59","slug":"introduction-to-networking-and-security","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/student.wp.odu.edu\/ihenr002\/?page_id=184","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to Networking and Security"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">This course provided an overview of current networking concepts and technology with the objectives of 1) describing fundamental concepts, technologies, components, and issues related to communications and data networks, 2) describing basic network architecture, and 3) applying knowledge of network technologies to design and construct a working network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assignment #1:<\/strong> Designing and Building a Simple Network &#8211; This assignment is business plan that shows a diagram of a simple network and the proposed budget for the network. Beforehand, we were taught the difference between different types of cables and how long their connections can run, even though the length of the runs should be as short as possible to prevent attenuation given we were using copper cables. I used a combination of switches and routers to achieve connectivity on both floors. This floor plan also shows both star and extended star topography depending on how many rooms were in a given vicinity. This assignment also provides a budget table with links to the equipment I would use to complete the network. On the networking side, what I learned from this assignment is how to combine the different topographies to optimize a network; however, there is definitely still more work that I can do to clean up the diagrams and maybe even lower the cost. Creating this assignment also taught me about how to create a business plan: I tried to create easy to read slides while still providing the necessary information to complete the assignment, and I learned that there was more to work on concerning the presentation-style that I addressed in the second part of this assignment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!selectors.core.file.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/student.wp.odu.edu\/ihenr002\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35258\/2026\/04\/Wiring-Constant-Hall-Assignment.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px\" aria-label=\"Embed of Wiring-Constant-Hall-Assignment.\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-65314ee6-02be-4151-bfd0-cd63522066e3\" href=\"https:\/\/student.wp.odu.edu\/ihenr002\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35258\/2026\/04\/Wiring-Constant-Hall-Assignment.pdf\">Wiring-Constant-Hall-Assignment<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/student.wp.odu.edu\/ihenr002\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35258\/2026\/04\/Wiring-Constant-Hall-Assignment.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-65314ee6-02be-4151-bfd0-cd63522066e3\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Extending the Campus Backbone (Wiring Constant Hall #2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This assignment was similar to the first Wiring Constant Hall Assignment, except this time we were tasked with extending the campus backbone by using fiber-optic cables. When creating different diagrams, I still used a combination of star and extended star topographies depending on the type of space it was. This time, the routers, ports, and servers were all stored in a telecommunications room; all of the wiring went back to the telecommunications room. Looking back, working with CAT5 cables and running everything back to one room would definitely increase attenuation. This assignment also added fiber-optic cables which I installed in the stairwells, so they would be able to connect to each other without having to travel a far distance, there is also access to the rest of the campus given the placement of the stairwells.
