Week 12 – Journal Entry 12

After reading Glasswasherparts data breach letter, two economic theories that can be identified are laissez-fare and rational choice. Laissez-fare suggests that government should not intervene in the economy except to protect individuals’ inalienable rights. In the letter it mentions how the platform offered its cooperation to federal law enforcement. Rational choice suggests that individuals/businesses make choices in their best interest (pleasure versus pain). Early in the letter it’s mentioned that although they’re not aware of any misuse of certain individuals information, notice is still given to protect themselves against possible identity theft or fraud. Two social science theories that can be identified in the letter are parsimony and ethical neutrality. Through parsimony, the letter kept the explanation of the incident as simple as possible to bring enough caution to the customer. Mentioning the origin and what kind of attack caused this. Through ethical neutrality, the letter’s main point that got across was that customers personal information might be compromised and it be best to contact their providers to make sure nothing was stolen. This shows that Glasswasherparts has the personal data of its customers and with that information leaked, they’re obligated to contact its customers.
