Week 6 – Journal Entry

Comparing three fake websites and their real counterparts:

Fake: ABCnews.com.co, CBSnews.com.co, nationalgeographic.com.co

Real: abcnews.go.com, cbsnews.com, nationalgeographic.com

When looking at the fake sites aside from their real counterparts you see the differences in the links and the domain. When websites have more than one TLD embedded in the link, that is one sign that a website can be fraudulent. Not only that when you place these links into a search engine, notice if the SSL encryption https is in there. If not then the site has not been confirmed as secure. Last thing is to check spelling. A lot of times in fraudulent sites, particularly in phishing schemes, you’ll notice the sites containing multiple uppercase and lowercase combinations to deceit the user. A tactic like this is an example of typosquatting. These are just a few examples. If you are reading this, please do not look into the fake websites at your own risk!
