Cybersecurity Internship

My internship position was as a notetaker for the AFCEA Maritime IT Summit/DON CIO Conference.

Introduction

This internship allowed me to learn what the future of cybersecurity may look like in relation to the Navy. I was a notetaker for the AFCEA Maritime IT Summit/DON CIO Conference. It was a three-day event where the keynote speakers and panelists discussed cybersecurity, future protective methods, and what we need to focus on going forward. I chose this internship because I did not know what kind of role I wanted to take with Cybersecurity. Going to this conference and listening to the various professionals in this field gave me an overall of the different possibilities in cybersecurity. During this internship, I researched all of the topics and speakers ahead of time to make sure I knew the basics of what would be talked about, took notes during the conference for each speaker and panelist, and created an overall report about the conference.

Use of skills or knowledge of cybersecurity in the internship

I had the basics for some of the topics, but at the conference and in my research, I learned a lot more. The main topics I knew were related to cyber readiness and how important it is for everyone to know. During the conference, one main point was that we need to have a culture change for a strong cybersecurity understanding and preparedness. I spent the internship learning about productive uses of cybersecurity instead of doing things based on what I already knew. This internship helped me understand the different roles available in cybersecurity, what they do, and how they all work together.
