Sharing Passwords, addresses, or photos of others: Sharing this data can lead to all kinds of trouble for those who had their information shared without consent. If passwords are shared, anyone can log into that person’s account to get or do whatever they want. If someone is sharing an address, that can lead to physical security risks for that individual. Photo sharing without consent is only illegal if done on private property, and overall, there’s no telling where the pictures could end up and there’s no way of knowing what kind of harm could be caused.

Recording a call without consent: This one ties into the sharing of photos without consent. In a call, anything that would be considered private or personal can come up, and if that is being recorded without consent can cause harm for the victim or even potentially be used as blackmail against the victim depending on what was said in the conversation. Every company that records calls always starts the call by telling the customer that the call is being recorded so that they know and if they do not want to be recorded will have to talk to someone in person, giving that customer the opportunity to decide whether or not they would like a recorded conversation.

Faking identity online: Identity theft is a very serious crime, whether it is for malicious reasons or not. In this case, the offender is using someone else’s information online in order to pretend to be them. This can be done in simple cases like social media all the way through to serious crimes involving money and banks by using someone else’s identity instead of their own. This can cause harm to the victim that is being impersonated in various ways.

Collecting information about children: This article is specifically related to those under the age of 13. Children are especially vulnerable when it comes to any kind of attack against them. Gathering information on children can vary from their daily schedules to addresses to medical records, all of which can put that child in danger. There is a growing rate of sex trafficking and child pornography happening in our society today, so any sharing of child information puts more children at risk of attacks. This is by far the most serious violation because there is no way for the child to be aware of the threat or stop the threat from happening.

Bullying and trolling: Bullying has been a problem for a long time, only it used to just be in person and can be avoided by the victim avoiding the bully most of the time. However, when it comes to cyberbullying (which is most often the case now with such easy access to the internet) it is harder to avoid. Bullying and trolling are both done by people hiding behind a screen to target someone for whatever reasons but mean to cause harm to the victim. There are ways to report when this happens, but action is not taken often enough. Overall, this may not bring physical harm to the victim, this kind of bullying can bring mental harm to the victim which can become more serious. In these cases, a cyberbullying or trolling offense can go from a civil matter to a criminal one.
