Cybersecurity threats can occur anywhere in the world and almost anyone could fall victim to them. Two countries where cyber threats are prevalent include China and the United States. Examples of these threats include spam, phishing, and pirating. Most people know what spam is, but not everyone knows the strategy that’s behind it. A botnet is a grouping of machines that is controlled by a cybercriminal to send out spams. China is one of the top countries that hosts these botnets and the United States is a source of advanced fee fraud, another type of spam. Advanced fee is a type of spam that comes from someone sending a spam email offering something appealing to the target. At the end, the target is required to pay a fee. Another type of threat is called phishing. The United States is a target for most of these attacks, and both China and the United States are top sources for phishing attacks. Phishing is when cyber criminals deceive their target by acting as a trusted source in order to obtain personal financial information on their victims. This can cause victims to lose thousands of dollars. Lastly, pirating is a cybersecurity threat that occurs from illegally copying and selling anything digital. Two of the top countries for pirating include both China and the United States.
