Workplace deviance has always been a problem as long as organizations looking to make a profit have existed.  I prefer to believe that humans are inherently good and like to act in altruistic ways (whether that is true is another discussion), but I also acknowledge that there are just some people who are only out for themselves and don’t care what cutthroat methods they have to use to get themselves to the top.  As cyber technology has advanced, the amount of people who try to capitalize on the virtualization of the world has also increased.  Newer and more efficient technology has helped to facilitates the efforts of those who act with malintent.  In 2022, all the knowledge of the world is in the palm of one’s hand, quite literally.  People who want to make money at the expense of others are able to do so now with relative ease.  Anyone with critical access to a company could give out their login information or otherwise allow an unauthorized person to gain access to the system whenever they want to.  Many people don’t realize how easy it is to infiltrate a system with an inside man, and that is exactly how the majority of cyber security breaches occur.  A username and a password could give somebody access to all the unencrypted data of customers for a business and they may choose to do whatever they want with that, although if they are caught, they will of course face punishment which can range from termination to jail time.  Aiding a bad actor is not the only form of workplace deviance.  The vast increase of social media platforms and forum sites, such as Reddit, means that an employee could go on these sites at work whenever, providing the firewall for the company does not block the traffic from that site. This could lead to a decrease in productivity and cost the company if a worker decides they want to goof off on YouTube at work instead of entering data into a spreadsheet like they were tasked to.  As cyber technology continues to advance, even in the simplest ways, the propensity for workplace deviance will also continue to increase.
