Personal Statement
My parents nurtured my curiosity of the world through trips to different museums, state parks, and even our own back yard. My mother once dissected a flower and pointed out the different parts to my sister and me when we were children. During high school I took a variety of different science classes including chemistry, physics, biology, and astronomy because I wanted to learn more about some of the different branches of science. I chose to major in biology because of a discussion I had with my high school biology teacher, who sparked my interest in genetics. It was brought to my attention that it is unusual for my mum and her sister to have grey and blue eyes respectively when their parents have hazel. From there I started researching how eye color is expressed, followed by further research into genetics including genetic disorders and syndromes. My research into these syndromes and disorders sparked a fascination in the medical field.
My ultimate career goal is to go into the medical field as a physician’s assistant (physician associate). The challenge of figuring out how to meet each patient’s needs is exciting to me. My initial interest in field came from discussions with family and friends who have been in the field. However, my own experience with physician’s assistants cemented my desire to pursue that career path.
Since I was about 12 years old I have been navigating the complexities of having a chronic condition. Most of my care since I was diagnosed has been done through physician’s assistants. My prescription, medication changes, lab requests, and general maintenance of my condition have been handled by PAs. Through my experiences I came to enjoy the connections I made with them. I realized that if I wanted to have that personal one on one relationship with my patients that the best path would be to become a PA.
