How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
Workplace deviance means deliberate, malicious attempts to sabotage an organization by causing problems in the workplace. It can also be defined as voluntary behavior that violates significant norms and in so doing threatens the well being of an organization and the workers. The rise in cyber technology has created more opportunities for workplace deviance to occur. This is due to the insider threats within a company or an organization. Cyber loafing is an example of a type of work place deviance that occurs. Cyber loafing can be defined as the act of employees using their companies’ Internet access for personal purposes during work hours. This is a type of work place deviance because this action threatens the well being of the company. A common type of workplace deviance is unproductive behavior, so things like taking advantage of the Internet for personal use falls under this. Other things like abuse of property and not following company policies can be considered workplace deviance. Cyber technology is allowing workers to use work phones or computers to access their personal information during work hours. The rise of technology has caused such a bigger problem for companies because many people do not use the technology for what it is there for. Another problem that I feel has come about because of technology is many people will be on social media while at work instead of working on their tasks. Some also online shop while at work which most likely violates what the company wants to use the technology for. Many do not use cyber technology maliciously and subconsciously do it. More and more organizations and companies are beginning to use cyber technology, but this could start to create problems within the organization. Overall, there should be rules about using technology in the workplace in order to decrease workplace deviance.
