- What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?
Cybercrime is when a criminal activity is carried out on the internet and through the use of technology. Criminal justice is the delivery of justice to someone who has committed a crime. As technology has become more and more popular, cybercrime has also increased. This means that people who work in the criminal justice field are having to get the knowledge in order to stop cyber crimes from happening. The people who are stopping cyber attackers are people who work in the criminal justice field. Although criminal justice is the overall term for someone who works in the field to stop crime, these people are still trying to stop all crimes. Some may be specialized in a certain direction and have a level of expertise in an area, but there is someone in the criminal justice field that tries to stop cyber crimes from happening. In this class we have discussed many different types of cybercrimes that are becoming popular as technology grows to be more popular. Some of the cybercrimes that we have discussed include advanced persistent threats (or APT’s), inside attack, password attacks, and malware just to name a few. These types of threats will be broken down by someone in the criminal justice field in order to catch the criminal. Whether the crime is happening to a single person or an entire company someone in the criminal justice field will have the chance of catching the criminal. The field of criminal justice exists because of the crimes that are happening all around us. Cybercrime is just looking at a specific type of crime, so someone in the criminal justice field can catch a criminal completing the act of a cybercrime. As technology advances so will cybercrime, so people working in the criminal justice field also have to enhance their knowledge about the crime.
How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?
The interactions between offenders and victim’s is different than one when a typical crime occurs. This interaction is usually over the internet. In most cases the offenders do the crime over the internet and most times the offender do not know their victims. I think this makes it harder to find the offender because the offender is not actually seen doing the attack of the crime. Also some offenders may find information about the victim they are planning on attacking through the use of technology. As previously discussed it is scary knowing that by a simple google search of your name all the information about you comes up. If someone wanted to commit a crime against me, it would be very possible because of the information that can be found on the internet. Although cybercrimes are done over the internet, so there would be no social in person interaction, there can still be interaction through technology. For example, the act of phishing is when someone sends an email to another person pretending that it is coming from an actual company in order to get information from the victim. This is still a form of interaction, but it is just not in person.
