Benjamin Franklin once stated, “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” In an academic point of view I would say this quote means that without academic progress there is no way people can say that they have achieved their goals. When I first began this class, I was naïve with many writing errors and with my grammar. The lessons have helped me to analyze my papers more in depth for mistakes and to identify my grammatical errors more easily. My essays have a stronger structure and better wording than when I first came into the course. My confidence level has boosted since I began writing essays during this course because I am able to provide a strong essay with all the requirements. When our essays are due the class participates in a peer-review activity where essays are switched between classmates for reviewing and editing. I never worried that my essay would be a complete failure, but that didn’t mean I didn’t have my doubts about my fellow classmates reading my paper. I now am very open to the fact that other classmates read and analyze my essays because in the end it is only to help the student writing the essay. When the professor began going over comma splices and incomplete sentences, everything changed for me in a positive way. This was one of the most influential lessons I have had all year due to the fact that most of my old papers were filled with comma splices. I used to believe my essays were outstanding; however, I did not understand where I went wrong when I would get my essays back with an average grade of a C. Now I understand all the grammatical errors that can cause students to fail an essay and how to correct them as well. In addition to the lessons taught in class, another great benefit that aided my writing process were the mandatory study halls we had to attend. With the study hall professors’ help, they would make sure I understood my mistakes and how to fix them. This meant I would not leave study hall with a doubt in my mind.
