The article examines and raises questions about the integration of technology and biology. While this may not be a major deal now, it will only continue to grow as both fields do and become intertwined. The development of this can be seen as both a positive and a negative. Many would argue that the positives outweigh the negatives, but until the proper security measures are in place, I believe it should only be considered a negative.
The positives would lead to a growth in knowledge within our health system. Doctors could use the information from the DNA to find the root of problems for people, discover any underlying diseases, and create personalized medicine. The use of DNA on the internet now has shown us how it has led to the reconnection of families and the discovery of family cultures. The use of DNA and technology would only expand as discoveries and connections between the two are discovered.
The negatives relate to the privacy and security put in place. As described in the articles, a person cannot go and get new DNA like they could get a new debit card or password. Thus, if this information was exposed how would one ever be able to secure their information again? A criminal could get ahold of your DNA, go out commit a crime, and leave your strands of DNA to be found instead of theirs. This would lead to extreme consequences in today’s society. Until there are strict cyber laws and frameworks that companies who have access to DNA must follow, I think it is dangerous for any human to have DNA uploaded online.
