Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a more enveloped aspect of the technological society that is flourishing in the 21st century. The beginning of this technology in practices can be seen in the implementation of AI in digital criminal investigations. Within the article the author discusses the role of AI in law enforcement. This Article review will discuss how the article relates to a principle of social science, the discussion of the articles research question, methods, and data and analysis, how concepts from class presentations are related, and lastly, how the article correlates to concerns of marginalized groups, and the overall societal impact of the study.
Review of Literature
The principles of science that I correlated with the article are parsimony, and ethical neutrality. Near the beginning of the article, I reviewed the principles of parsimony and ethical neutrality, the author states, “Digital criminal investigation, in its multifaceted role, encompassing the scrutiny of historical events, and proactivity, aimed at preventing potential threats, while simultaneously upholding the sanctity of digital environments and preserving individual privacy” (Faqir, 2023). This quote relates to the two principles by it describes the scope of a multifaceted digital investigation, and also dives into the principle of ethical neutrality in discussing of prevention of potential threats but ensuring to act within the bounds of digital environment and individual privacy.
The articles research question can be described as the “necessity to investigate and scrutinize the intricate legal dimensions and the impact of AI deployment within the sphere of digital investigations” (Faqir, 2023). The author poses this question to best encompass every factor surrounding AI envelopment and every possibility surrounding it in a digital investigation scope. Within the article the author briefly discusses their research methodology when reviewing this material, I found that the research methods used in the article is the archival research method. It is archival because most of the material gathered is from written records law, websites, etc. On the next point of the articles data and analysis the author states how he best composed an analysis stating, “To analyze the data collected from this diverse array of sources, the ‘content analysis method’ served as the chosen analytical framework” (Faqir, 2023).
Next, relating the article to a concept from the module presentations. In Module 9 the topic of values and cybersecurity was discussed, the article’s main objective is to look at the impact of AI. Cultures and values especially in the cybersecurity realm can heavily correlate, in the presentation it states how cybersecurity professionals believe in controlling access to data this relates to AI because that is how AI would function in a digital investigation by accessing data. This topic in particular relates to challenges for marginalized groups because in criminal investigations the system is broken challenging these groups and with the implementation of AI this will only further because building AI into a broken system. Lastly, the overall contributions of the study, in my opinion, AI will bring a more diverse and technologically advanced outlook on digital investigations to continue growing the field.
Conclusion
In conclusion the article reviews the implementation of AI and how it can be helpful in its use in digital investigations. This article review looked at the principles of science related, the research question presented, the research method used, data and analysis, a relation to a class presentation, challenges for marginalized groups, and the overall contribution to society.
