Cybersecurity risks in the United States and in other countries can be similar and very different. Take for example Russia. Russia has been the source of many recent cyber attacks on the United States. The most recent one is the gas pipeline hack. This stopped the gas from working for most of the east coast. This was a ransomware attack. Also, Russian hackers hacked the DNC in 2016. They did this to influence the election results. They also concurrently successful launched a social media campaign where they created millions of fake profiles and spread fake news with the same intention of influencing election results. The goals of Russian cyber risks and USA cyber risks are very different. The USA faces a very real cyber risk in virtually every infrastructure. We saw this with the pipeline hack. USA is on defense mode when it comes to cyber attacks. Russian hackers are trying to hack American infrastructure and disrupt American politics or get money through ransomware attacks. Russia, however, is in offensive mode for cyber attacks. They are the ones who are sending out cyber attacks to other countries to try to mess up other countries. The cyber risks for these two countries are very different. The United States risks losing election results integrity, while Russia risks starting a new type of war – Cyberwar. If Russia continues to launch attacks on the United States and other allied countries, a cyber war is likely to occur in the future.
