What evidence do we have for or against the idea that humans have stopped evolving?
To be clear, evolution does not mean better, more complex or more sophisticated. Evolution is about the ability of an organism to adapt to it’s environment, with the most fit being the most ecologically successful. At this point in our very brief history on the planet, we have amassed quite a bit of technology that allows us to adapt the environment to ourselves.
We can sustain, or at the very least prolong, the lives of some of our sickest individuals. We’ve found ways to reproduce despite infertility. We’ve genetically engineered crops and animals to increase production and be more resilient, allowing us to provide a more consistent source of food. If we are adapting our environment to our own needs, are we still evolving to be the most fit for our environment?
