Cybersecurity spiked my interest due to many reasons. One thing that helped me choose Cybersecurity as my major was because my grandpa had a job in cybersecurity while I was growing up which made me see how fascinating it is. Cyber security technology is super important in todays world due to everything being very digital. Almost everything people do in this age is online. Cyber security helps provide safe and secure networks for individuals and organizations. It also plays a critical role in preventing cyber attacks, data breeches, and online threats.
ODU has many other majors that can relate to cybersecurity as well. For example : Computer Science. This major provides a strong foundation in programming, software development, algorithms, and data structures. It is closely related to cybersecurity because of how computer systems work is important in identifying problems that can occur and can also help develop secure software solutions. Another major that ODU provides is called :Information Systems. The Information system major focuses on managing and utilizing technology in organizations. It covers many aspects such as database management, system analysis, and enterprise resource planning. In the context of cybersecurity, knowledge about information systems is important for having security measures and making sure the integrity of data is good. Next there is Electrical Engineering. This major deals with the study and application of electronics, electromagnetism, and electrical circuits. In the relation to cybersecurity, electrical engineering plays a role in securing hardware components and designing secure communication protocols, and understanding the workings of electronic systems. This is relevant to cyber security due to the need to understand how electronic systems work. Lastly there is Criminal Justice. Criminal Justice was my second choice for a major because much of my family is law enforcement and I think it is such an interesting job. A major in Criminal Justice can be beneficial in the field of cybersecurity. It provides an understanding of legal and ethical issues, investigative techniques, and law enforcement practices. This knowledge can be valuable for cybersecurity professionals as they work on cases involving cybercrime and collaborate with law enforcement agencies.
