After viewing the YouTube video, Hacker Rates 12 Hacking Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? | Insider, there have been a few misconceptions about hackers and hacking that were proven right and wrong. Insider brought Keren Elazari to review different scenes from movies due to her background as a seasoned security analyst and she describes whether or not the scenes are based on fact or exaggerated.
Elazari makes very descriptive observations amongst different movie scenes and explains how they relate to the real world. I would have never thought that hackers really wore gloves at all, to hack into systems, but Elazari makes it a point to say that it is imperative to wear fingerless gloves in order to type faster. This kind of threw me for a loop, but Elazari wears fingerless gloves during the interview also, which presses the idea that it must be true. However, I still do not feel that is the case.
There are some points that Elazari makes that confirm my suspicions, such as the technology that can be used to intercept signals on a wifi network and the idea that many can use credentials that allow for access to sensitive data. The idea of having these portable devices raises concern on what networks to join and who has access to your information when attached to that network. Furthermore, many could have administrative controls on different websites to where they could see the information that you post and in turn, jeopardize the information you have listed on your social media platforms or accounts. Many hackers seem to have to ability to find account information as well, that would allow them to access the information whenever, and wherever they are at any time.
Elazari has the necessary experience to demonstrate that what she has seen in the real world has been highly exaggerated or is right on the mark when viewing them in terms of Hollywood. There are other things that she elaborates on such as techniques and warning signs of being infected by malicious code, but to me, those misconceptions were proven correct as many warning signs are not going to be right in your face, and the CIA or FBI are not able to pinpoint exact locations instantaneously. Many of the hacking techniques take time and software will let you know but not at the same magnitude dramatized by Hollywood.
This video was a great opportunity to see how the cyber world is different between both the real world and the movie/dramatized version. Elazari provides the necessary information to help distinguish between the two. She provides very good insights into the cyber world and how it should be viewed.
