Individual Motives

Within this module we learn about 7 different motives for people to commit cyber crimes. Each motive differs from one another, except for multiple motives, the other six include: Entertainment, Political, Revenge, Boredom, Recognition, and for money. With each motive being different from each other I would rank them, in terms of sense, in the order below:

Multiple Reasons
Political
For Money
Revenge
Boredom
Recognition
Entertainment

The ranking system would vary from person to person, but to me I feel this is how I would rank each motive from 1 making the most sense to 7 making the least sense. Multiple reasons would be my number one because the idea of a cyber attack really comes down to a foundation of multiple motives and not just one. When looking at it as such, one can see that 2 or more motives could be grouped together as the true reason for a cyber crime to be committed. Entertainment would be ranked at the very bottom as the risks do not outweigh the consequences just based upon being entertained to commit a crime, however, there are some people in this world that could potentially use that as their motive.

Diving into the middle ranks of this list, these singular motives are ranked based upon the goals or benefits that one could hope for. Political motives to try to form or appease an agenda ranks high as this can affect many people within a society. When it comes to instant gratification, money would be underneath this as the main benefit to committing the crime is increased revenue of sorts. Revenge is placed in the middle, because this is a situation in which cyberbullying could be a driving factor for someone to commit a crime, but at the same time the offender could still outweigh the risks versus the benefits before pushing for the revenge motive. The last two, boredom and recognition I see as interchangeable. Both are very obscure as motives because when they are seen as such, why would someone want to be apprehended for being bored or wanting to be recognized by the community? Recognition could be on the basis of not having the self-fulfilling feeling of being seen by the community or their close family and friends, but the idea of committing a crime for that fulfillment and facing jail time does not make the most sense.
