The five most illegal things that people do on the internet without usually knowing they are committing an illegal act are sharing addresses or photos of others, using other peoples internet networks, bullying and trolling, using unofficial streaming services, and faking your identity. The first one, sharing addresses or photos of others might not seem a big deal, but when you enter the world of doxxing, this is a really big deal. People online can be insane, and the barrier between someone being online and showing up at your door can be really scary, especially with stalkers. Protecting your own privacy and the privacy of others is always important. Another is using other people’s networks. Although there are usually passwords, if there isnt it is still illegal to use someone else’s network without their consent. This is a type of theft and there is usually data on the networks that is private. The third is bullying and trolling. Many people have seen funny videos of someone being trolled online, but it crosses a line when it comes to harming a business or someone’s life. A simple joke might be fine, but when the bullying moves to harassment or real threats onto someone’s life it can be a civil or criminal offense and jail time. The fourth is using an unofficial streaming service. Although there are some ethical questions when it comes to pirating movies, shows, or games. Such as, should culture really be behind a paywall? The actual dangers are that one, the companies that make movies and shows lose so much money due to piracy we no longer gain the content, and two, that your personal data will be stolen while watching these illegal streams. The fifth is faking your identity. Many people enjoy remaining anonymous on the internet which is usually fine. This crosses a line when your anonymity is someone else’s identity which can lead to you defaming them or just identity theft.
