Week 1 Entry

How does your major relate to cybersecurity technology?

My major studying at ODU is cybersecurity. As you could guess, it is directly related to the topic at hand. Anything that happens or develops relating to cybersecurity technology affects me and my future field of work. An example of a major event that could end up changing me or the way I work is a serious cybersecurity attack on a normally secure place with sensitive information, such as a government building. A real world example of this is the Pentagon suffering multiple cyber attacks through out the course of time. When it is figured out why cyber attacks are happening and how to stop them, it is up to me to absorb the information I can so that I can properly help defend against cyber attacks of the same caliber in the future, whether it is against another government institute, company, etc.

As technology progresses in the cybersecurity field, the levels and complexity of attacks do as well, as technology can be used by both sides. It is my responsibility to have up to date knowledge and be able to apply that knowledge to my job so that I can properly carry it out. Theoretically, if in the future I am working for the cybersecurity department of an institute, company, etc. I will be informed and be up to date with latest technology and cybersecurity potential by my co-workers or superiors, if I haven’t done that already myself.

The information and technology also applies to other fields, with the most obvious one being protecting private companies with sensitive information from cyber attacks. Really, anything with sensitive information requires a good layer of cybersecurity, not just companies. The knowledge in this field is applicable almost everywhere in the world of growing technology. It is a fantastic choice for someone who is unsure about what they want to do in the future but wants to be relevant in today’s society.
