Maslow, A., created the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, a pyramid illustrating the importance of various human needs. Technology has become increasingly important as it intertwines with everyday life. The first and base level of the pyramid is physiological needs, which are the basic requirements for survival. For example, my cousin relies on an insulin pump, and if it stops working, she could go into shock, potentially leading to death. The second level is safety needs. As a security clerk, one of my responsibilities is to manage people’s electronic records. If someone gains unauthorized access to my system, they would have access to over 250,000 security profiles, including social security numbers, birthdates, and other sensitive information that can significantly impact people’s lives. The third tier of the pyramid is love and belongingness needs, which involve emotional relationships. Social media has revolutionized how individuals connect and maintain relationships. Additionally, video chat platforms
like Zoom and FaceTime enable people to communicate with loved ones around the world with ease. The fourth tier is esteem needs, which include the desire for respect and self-esteem. Social media also plays a role here, as individuals seek recognition and respect from their peers by showcasing their achievements and receiving positive feedback. The fifth and highest level is self-actualization, which is about self-fulfillment and personal growth. Technological advancements such as online courses, photo editing software, and book-related apps like Kindle facilitate this pursuit of personal development and creativity. Technology has many different uses both important for the world and ones that are important to oneself.
