The concept of cell biology has always been with me growing up. We learn at a young age that there are little “things” that make up all living organisms. In grade school, we then learn that these tiny things divide with a fancy process called mitosis that makes more tiny things. Every year we learn more and more about our cells in general biology class, but the amount of cell biology information that has been absorbed into my head this semester is more than I ever imagined. The in-depth information I now know about cell biology is crazy to me. From how our cells reproduce, to the different kinds of cells, to DNA replication, and genetics. When I go home for Thanksgiving and my family asks, “Ashley, what have you learned in cell biology this semester?” I am going to feel just like SpongeBob Square Pants stressing in his boater safety class not knowing where to start. There is so much knowledge to share I will not know where to begin, not to mention how hard it is going to be to put the material learned in class into simple terms for them. The real test will be when talking to my older sister. She was a biology major and is one of the smartest people I know; when talking to her about this class I am going to truly be able to put my knowledge to the test.
