What is Digital Forensics?
The career that I am choosing is something that most people do not really assume is part
of cybersecurity and don’t tend to lead to as often. Digital Forensics is a field that I think is very
interesting because instead of your normal definition of cybersecurity that most people assume is
just strictly defense, digital forensics works with people like the police to get digital information.
This includes data found in digital devices like phones or computers as well as data and digital
information in cybercrime. I feel that digital forensics is something that many people look over
when they think about cyber security because it isn’t what you expect because this is something
that links heavily with forensic science. The use of this field are mainly found in court cases such
as criminal cases as well as civil cases and investigations by police departments, the FBI, CIA,
and others. Not only is it used for criminal cases but they also can be involved in Private
Investigations. With people in this field working closely with law enforcement as well as for the
government itself, it is important to know the impact and other terms associated with this field.
The term digital footprint is one that you’ve most commonly heard before as it is pretty common
nowadays. This term is essentially what you as a person are doing on the internet and involves
things like what they search up, webpages they look at, posts they make on social media, etc.
Companies sometimes check your social media accounts to see if any inappropriate posts have
been made and that can decide whether they hire you or not. Checking suspects search history is
something that Digital forensics does in order to see if the suspect had many searches that would correspond with the crime. Something that comes with the job is sometimes not knowing what
you’re going to find, say for example if they are going in and searching the data in a criminals
phone or computer, you have no idea whether what you are going to find is gonna be something
minuscule or something mortifying. In order to get a job like this you would need to know a
multitude of different skills such as obviously knowing many aspects of cybersecurity, knowing
your way around files, operating systems, knowledge of different types of scams, etc. Like most
cyber fields you will need to have certifications and also some jobs may require a bachelors in
cybersecurity. With the world becoming more and more technologically advanced and us
depending more and more on the internet for our daily lives, it comes with no surprise that jobs
like these are on the rise. With us leaning more on tech means more and more pathways to open
with cybercrime and people in fields like this one get hired more and more.
