Why are you interested in cybersecurity technology?

I have always been more of a hands-on learner. That is precisely why I chose cybersecurity as my major. As an adolescent, observing the advancements in technology, I came to the conclusion there is indeed a requirement for securing technology in order to be effective, efficient, and stable, after all there are businesses and possibly lives at stake. I am positive cyber security will provide me with the knowledge and skill to proceed in assisting with these major crime occurrences. I believe by participating in the class I will gain more knowledge.

Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.

Database management: Database management includes protecting the database itself, the data it contains, its database management system, and the various applications that access it. Organizations must secure databases from deliberate attacks such as cybersecurity threats and misuse of data and databases by those who can access them.

Network engineering: The role of network security engineer will put you in charge of designing and managing security systems, ensuring that an organization’s network is protected from bugs, malware, and other cyberthreats. Some of the duties of a network security engineer include monitoring, testing, and configuring hardware and software.

Software engineering: Cybersecurity professionals develop embedded security systems, test for potential weaknesses, and respond to cyber attacks. Software engineers create and implement software programs. The most robust software programs are developed by skilled software engineers and protected by vigilant cybersecurity practices.

Social science: Social cybersecurity uses computational social science techniques to identify, counter, and measure (or assess) the impact of communication objectives. The methods and findings in this area are critical, and advance industry-accepted practices for communication, journalism and marketing research.
