Assignment #1 : Entry #1

When researching through the majors that were offered at ODU, I settled on Cybersecurity. I have always had an interest in computers. Due to this, I looked into Computer Science. While I am not majoring in that department, I am minoring in it. Cybersecurity offered me a way to be involved in computers while also protecting others. When someone is well versed in Cybersecurity practices, they can better protect themselves and the world around them. They can go on to teach other people how to protect their information on the internet. Some other majors that relate to Cybersecurity consist of Computer Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Criminal Justice. First, Computer Science is studying the software that resides in computers. This is a great tool when it comes to understanding how people actually cause crime on the internet. Computer Scientists are heavily involved in coding. This gives them the upper hand when understanding the actual way people commit cyber crimes.  Next, Psychology relates because we can study how people think and the reason they commit cyber crimes. When studying Psychology, students learn how the brain works. In order to solve a crime, we must get inside of the criminal’s head. Psychology gives us the avenue to do that.  Sociology follows the same pattern. In sociology, we can study society and how that impacts the reasons people do what they do. Society greatly impacts why we do what we do. Things that are out of someone’s control can influence someone to commit a crime for a variety of reasons. Lastly, Criminal Justice directly relates to Cybersecurity. When dealing with cyber crimes, we have to know and understand different practices for solving it. Criminal Justice is the study of criminals and how they do what they do. People in Cybersecurity do exactly the same thing just in cyberspace.
