NURS 314

Camouflage is one of the oldest methods of self-preservation known to man. Be it by instinct or learned art the ability to blend in with one’s surroundings has proved to be a vital skill if one is to survive. While few people today have the need to physically hide themselves this instinct manifests itself in other ways. Whether from fear of others or fear of oneself the desire to mask pain, fear, anger, or confusion is still a tool that many apply without a second thought. While this can sometimes be beneficial, the setting we find ourselves in demands that we be able to see past the fronts that our patients put up to protect themselves. Our role as nurses is one that requires a discerning emotional eye that enables us to see through the disguise so that we can clearly see the best way to bring healing and comfort. This skill is one that we must all hone throughout our careers if we wish to be masters of our craft. My collage showcases some amazing examples of camouflage that represents the masking of the patients’ true feelings and emotions.
